What is Jian Zhan?

Jian Zhan (建盏), or Jian Ware, refers to a kind of Chinese pottery that was originally made in Jianyang, China. Jian Zhan became prevalent during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Different kinds of Jian Zhan pottery exist, but bowls and cups are generally the most popular forms of craft. The crafting technique was registered as one of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China. Each piece of Jian Zhan is unique. Jian Zhan crafting technique is similar to Tenmoku teaware in Japan.

Each Jian Zhan piece is lovingly created by hand, ensuring that each piece is truly unique.

Unique Masterpiece
Jian Zhan cups are loved for their dark and thick glaze with colorful ‘special effects’. These special patterns are achieved by high temperature firing, so that the glaze starts to crystallise in beautiful patterns. Patterns that can occur could for example be stripes, feathers, or oil spots. Jian Zhan is recognised by its dark iron body and unique glaze patterns. All material used for making Jian Zhan is completely natural. The glaze liquid is made from plant ash, and the clay is locally mined from its place of origin Jianyang. Because both the glaze and the clay in Jianyang contain high iron content, after being fired by 1300℃ high heat over hours or even days, this natural combination composes a variety of colours and shapes of patterns.
